Exhibition opening reception - "Legacy: Celebrating African American Creativity in Central Virginia Through Art." Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Legacy Museum of African American History, the Daura Museum of Art at the University of Lynchburg and the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College will partner to host a joint exhibition, on view January 25 – February 28, 2025. This exhibition will run simultaneously at both museums. The exhibition opening is the kick-off event of a year-long celebration recognizing The Legacy Museum's 25 years of programming and educational initiatives spotlighting local African-American history. Join us for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration featuring an evening with Erika Alexander-an actress, trailblazing activist, entrepreneur, creator, producer, and director. Alexander starred as attorney Maxine Shaw on the popular 1990s series Living Single, on The Cosby Show and films including Get Out and last year’s Oscar-winning American Fiction. The event will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, January 27, in Smith Hall Theatre. She will engage in a conversation with Chief Diversity Officer Charles E. Gibson III, that will focus on King’s legacy and her work in the arts and as an activist. FREE and open to the public.

Maier Museum of Art
The Roman Bath at Isthmia in Greece continues to yield surprising archaeological discoveries. Jon Frey, Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Michigan State University, will discuss how excavations from the 1960s through the 1980s and more recent reexaminations of the excavated materials have revealed three structures on this site. Artifacts provide evidence for changes in Roman building practices as Romans from the re-founded colony of Corinth returned to Isthmia with their own unique needs and expectations. 4:30 pm Doors Open | 5 pm Lecture. 10 a.m.Capturing Connections: A Cyanotype Workshop for Teens

High school students are invited to dive into the world of cyanotype photography in this hands-on workshop inspired by "Ann Holsberry: Navigating Sea and Stars." Cyanotype, a camera-less technique known for its deep blue tones and ethereal qualities, allows for endless creative expression and experimentation. Working outdoors, like the artist herself, participants will create their own cyanotype prints, layering objects from nature onto light-sensitive paper and fabric to capture impressions that reveal intricate details and patterns. Join us for a special evening to celebrate Jim Peterson’s newest book of poetry, Towheaded Stone Thrower: The Harriet Poems (Press 53, The Silver Concho Poetry Series). Peterson will read a selection of poems with musical interludes provided by Grant Kittrell. Jim Peterson is the author of eight collections of poetry, three chapbooks, numerous plays, a novel, Paper Crown, (Red Hen Press) available on Audible, and a collection of short stories, The Sadness of Whirlwinds, (Red Hen Press.) He is professor emeritus at Randolph College and formerly on the faculty of The University of Nebraska Omaha Low-Res MFA Program. FREE and open to the public.

Join us for a unique opportunity to learn the traditional art of Monacan Honeysuckle Basket Weaving in this hands-on workshop led by Bertie Branham, Elder of the Monacan Nation, and Lou Branham, Assistant Chief, and director of the Monacan Nation Ancestral Museum. Participants will work with freshly harvested honeysuckle from Amherst County to create their own baskets while gaining insight into the history and cultural significance of this traditional craft, which continues to be made today. Members of the public are welcome to observe the workshop even if they do not make a basket. This inaugural workshop is part of a new series honoring Monacan Cultural Traditions.
